NOWRUZ IN DALLAS

The city of Dallas is home to one of the most diverse populations in the nation.  Including  one of the largest Persian American populations in the U.S. According to IACNT (Iranian-American Community of North Texas) the history of most Persians in the DFW metro and across the country ties to Iranian students during the late 1960s & 1970s. The Iranian revolution occurred during the 1970s forcing many Iranian students to seek residency and citizenship in their host countries (including the US, Australia, Canada, and parts of Africa).

The 1980s saw an increased amount of Iranians starting a new life in the Dallas area. Fast forward a few decades and  there is a growing and thriving Iranian American community in North Texas. The vast majority of the students have raised bilingual families in the area, created businesses, and have become politically active with issues in the US and back in Iran.

Dozens of Iranian Americans gathered in a small Baptist church in the Dallas suburb of Carrollton to celebrate Nowruz, the Persian New Year, on March 19, 2016. The name, Nowruz, literally means “New Day” and helps to celebrate the ushering in of the Spring season. The IACNT organization provided music, food, and a social atmosphere for one of the most important cultural holidays in the Persian community.

During this celebration, the Santoor (Iranian instrument) was the highlight of the event, including the Haft Sin table. The Haft Sin table is ” a ceremonial table (Spread) called Sofreh-e Haft Seen (cloth/Spread of seven dishes), where the name of each dish begins with the Persian letter Seen.” -  Farsinet.com
